Leave bare ground alone and life arrives in a predictable order, each stage changing conditions in ways that make the next stage possible.

- Primary succession starts where there is no soil at all — new volcanic rock, a retreating glacier. It is slow, because soil has to be built first.
- Secondary succession starts where soil survives — after a fire, a flood, or an abandoned farm field. Much faster.
Each stage builds the next one's habitat
Lichens crumble rock into grit. Their dead bodies add organic matter. That mixture is soil, and soil is what a grass seed needs. The pioneers make themselves obsolete.
The honest complication
“Climax community” suggests a final, permanent state. Ecologists have grown cautious about that word — disturbance is normal, and many ecosystems never settle. Treat it as a useful simplification rather than a law.
